Procymidone review

Status: review in progress

In December 2004 the APVMA began a review of procymidone because of concerns relating to human health, namely worker exposure and public exposure to residues in food. This was based on advice from the Office of Chemical Safety (OCS) following a scientific assessment that identified the potential for procymidone to cause birth defects in laboratory animals.

On 1 September 2004 procymidone was included into Schedule 7 of the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP) on the basis of its reproductive and developmental toxicity. The revised scheduling meant that stricter controls were required for the supply and use of procymidone products. These, in turn, required that new instructions and warnings be included on product labels.

On 18 December 2004, in the interests of public health and worker safety, the APVMA introduced a number of regulatory actions to control how procymidone was used. The APVMA recalled existing procymidone products in order to amend their product labels with new instructions. A number of uses were cancelled, longer withholding periods were applied, safety requirements were strengthened, and a warning statement was included (namely, that women of child-bearing age should not use the product). These new instructions will remain in effect until the review has been completed.

The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
