Important notice for retailers of products containing carbendazim

New instructions for possessing, having custody of, using or otherwise dealing with products containing the suspended label

The APVMA has been undertaking a review of the fungicide carbendazim. As part of this review it has been determined that the current label instructions for products containing carbendazim were inadequate.

Accordingly the APVMA has issued new instructions for carbendazim products that must be supplied with all new product from the manufacturer.

See the revised instructions for timber protection and turf and horticultural products containing carbendazim (PDF, 70kb)

These instructions include the removal of all uses of carbendazim on turf, grapes, cucurbits (including melons), citrus fruit, custard apple, mango, pome fruit (apples or pears) or stone fruit (including cherries).

They also include the revised signal heading “Dangerous Poison” (carbendazim will be Schedule 7), and extension of the existing health warning to include male infertility in laboratory animals.

The inclusion of carbendazim in Schedule 7 may impose greater requirements for training and record keeping on users of carbendazim products, depending on State/Territory legislation.

Existing stocks may be sold and used according to their current label instructions for a period of six months only after the suspension, ending 25 July 2010.

You may reproduce the instructions above for the information of purchasers.

Your assistance in informing end-users of these changes is appreciated.

This suspension is a consequence of the ongoing review of carbendazim and the associated reconsideration of the poisons schedule for carbendazim. This review is continuing and there may be further changes to the uses proposed as part of the Preliminary Review Findings when they are published.

These instructions apply to all products containing carbendazim until either the suspension ends, is revoked OR the APVMA issues new instructions for products containing carbendazim.
