There are no agricultural or veterinary products containing nitrofurans registered for use in Australia.
Nitrofurans review
Status: review completed
The former Australian Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Council (AAVCC) withdrew the registration for veterinary products containing nitrofurans on 31 December 1992 because of concerns over the lack of toxicological and residues data.
The AAVCC was responsible for the evaluation of chemicals proposed for registration in Australia and for the granting of a clearance certificate when safety and effectiveness had been demonstrated to the Council's satisfaction. The AAVCC became a national body responsible for considering and deciding on all major policy issues related to the clearance and registration of agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Australia. In June 1993, the National Registration Authority for Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (NRA) replaced the AAVCC. Read more on the history of the regulation of chemicals and veterinary medicines in Australia.
The Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) and uses for nitrofurans were withdrawn in 1992.
