Apply for a Permit
Before submitting an application, please refer to the guidelines and data requirements in the table below to ensure that applications are complete and contain all necessary information. Only a complete application will be accepted by the APVMA.
The following steps are a summary of the process of assessing a permit application, including your responsibilities as an applicant.
- You must decide on the category for your application by referencing either the Ag MORAG decision tree for Agricultural Permits or the Vet MORAG decision tree for Veterinary Permits
- An Application must include an application form and payment according with the table below
- An Application must contain your justification for the permit category and data or argument for:
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Human Toxicology
- Crop Safety
- Environment
- Residues
- Trade
- When the APVMA receives your application, the APVMA will send you a letter acknowledging receipt
- The application is screened to ensure it contains all necessary data. If there are required data or information missing, the APVMA will send you a deficiency letter
- When these deficiencies are adequately addressed the application will pass screening and the APVMA will send you a letter acknowledging this
- The application is then circulated to relevant stakeholders, including state and federal agencies and registrants
- The data are evaluated and any deficiencies identified. You will be notified of any remaining deficiencies and given time to address them
- After this time has passed, the APVMA will either grant or refuse the application. You may withdraw an application at any time prior to a determination being made by the APVMA

Types of Permits
Minor Use
Off-label Permits (OLP) allow registered agvet products to be used for a purpose or in a manner that is not included on the approved label. OLPs can only be granted for a used defined as a 'minor use'.
Supply/Use Permits (SUP) allow unregistered agvet products to be supplied and/or used for a specific purpose. SUPs can only be granted for a used defined as a 'minor use'.
Export Permits (XP) allow unregistered agvet products to be supplied (exported) to persons outside of Australia.
Emergency Use
Emergency Permits (EP) are granted in response to genuine emergency situations such as outbreaks of exotic diseases or pests. EPs will allow the use of registered agvet products or the supply and/or use of unregistered products, as the situation may require.
Research
Research Permits (RP) allow research and development of registered or unregistered agvet products or for other genuine scientific purposes. RPs can allow use as well as supply, as the situation may require.
