Application for mulesing alternative being assessed

20 July 2011

There has been publicity in rural media regarding the development of an alternative to surgical mulesing.  Known as SkinTraction, the method involves injection of a solution into the skin of sheep, resulting in a reduction in susceptibility to flystrike through reduced wrinkling in the area around the tail.

Recent media articles have stated that an application for registration of the product is being considered by the APVMA, and that the product may be registered in time for use in the 2012 lambing season.

The APVMA is considering an application for this product (PDF, 20kb).  At this stage it is not possible to predict when the application will be finalised.
