Is a vaccine available for use against pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 in Australia?

6 January 2012

In late 2011, an outbreak of disease due to paramyxovirus type1, which has not previously been reported in Australia, occurred in a number of pigeon flocks in Victoria. Affected pigeon flocks experienced high mortality associated with lethargy, gastrointestinal and neurological signs.

A vaccine against this virus (APMV1 vaccine) is available overseas but cannot currently be obtained or used in Australia. There is no currently registered vaccine that is specific for pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 available for use in pigeons in Australia.

Pigeon owners should consult their veterinarian about options to protect their flocks (external site), including possible use of other vaccines already available in Australia.

The APVMA has received an emergency permit application from a veterinary vaccine manufacturer to make a vaccine specific for pigeon paramyxovirus available in Australia. The application is supported by the Chief Veterinary Officer in the Victorian Department of Primary Industries.

The APVMA has commenced assessing the application. The outcome will depend on the completeness and quality of data received from the applicant as well as a favourable assessment of the biosecurity risks associated with the use of the vaccine in Australia by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
