Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) Standard
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) sets maximum residue limits (MRLs) for agricultural and veterinary chemicals in agricultural produce, particularly produce entering the food chain.
Export Slaughter Intervals (ESI) and Chemical Withholding Periods (WHP)
The APVMA regularly updates the Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) and withholding periods (WHP) for products used in sheep and cattle.
Spray Drift
Off-target spray drift that can accompany the application of pesticides is a concern that sometimes alarms the community and always challenges the agricultural industry to find ways to control it more effectively. The APVMA is responsible for ensuring that off-target pesticide spray drift does not harm human health, the environment or Australia’s international trade.
Agricultural and Veterinary Permits
In most States, registered products must only be used for purposes that are specified on the label. In practice, situations often arise where chemicals are needed for a use not specified on the label, these are often termed ‘off-label’ uses. The APVMA can consider applications for permits that allow for the legal use of chemicals in ways different to the uses set out on the product label. In certain circumstances, the limited use of an unregistered chemical may also be allowed by permit.
Recalls and Compliance
The APVMA encourages industry and the public to report the advertising and supply of unregistered and unapproved chemicals or promotion of products inconsistent with approved labels.
