Accessibility standards
Australian government departments and agencies are required by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to ensure that online information and services are accessible by people with disabilities.
For further information refer to the World Wide Web Access: Disability Discrimination Act Advisory Notes on the HREOC website.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority website seeks to comply with these standards and has undergone significant redesign in order to meet the Government Online standards that relate to access for people with disabilities. The site has been reviewed for compliance with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.
There may be some data on the website held in non-HTML formats. This data is in the process of being converted and is currently available to most environments supporting assistive technology. Accessibility features and tools on this website include:
- expandable browser design that can be viewed at a variety of resolutions from (1024x768).
- resizable text which can be altered either through the browser settings or by stylesheet commands.
- tab navigation to links and content.
- jump links to allow you to skip repetitive content.
- a print stylesheet allows printing of page content only.
The website has been tested with several versions of commonly used browsers including Internet Explorer , Firefox, Opera & Mozilla.
Skipping repetitive content
To aid users of text readers that read the code on each web page, every page on this site offers four jump links in the code at the top of each page.
The first link will take you to the site's main navigation.
The second link will take you to the page content.
The third link will take you to the site search facility.
Making the text bigger
The fonts used on this website are relative and can be enlarged in your browser.
Using Internet Explorer, go to the menu item View > Text Size, then select the size you want.
Using Netscape, go to the menu item View > Text Zoom, then select the size you want.
If you have a wheel mouse, scrolling the centre wheel with enlarge or reduce the text size.
Changing the site colours and contrasts
To change the colour of the text and background your browser displays you need to find the 'Colours' option dialogue box.
Using Internet Explorer, go to the menu item Tools > Internet Options > 'colours', then uncheck Use windows 'colours' and select the colours you prefer.
Using Netscape, go to the menu item Edit > Preferences > 'colours' then select Use my chosen 'colours'
Image use
As far as practical, images have not been used to represent text on this website. The number of images on pages has been kept to a minimum, and those used have been optimised to shorten the loading time of each page.
Alternative text tags (Alt text) have also been used for all images on this site to convey information represented by the image and the credit and source information for the specific image.

Portable Document Format (PDF)
Portable document format, or PDF, is a document format created by Adobe which is platform independent. To open, view and print PDF files, you will need a PDF Reader (external site).
Alternative means of viewing PDF files
To download and save the document to your hard drive for offline viewing right click on the document and choose "Save Target" or "Save link as" from the pop-up menu depending upon your browser. For Mac OS click and hold the link to the PDF file and choose "Download Link to Disk" from the pop-up menu. Specify a name and location for for the PDF file and then click Save.
To convert PDF to HTML by form and display in your browser immediately, please visit the Adobe PDF Conversion page (external site).
Alternatively you can mail the URL (web address) of the PDF in the body of an email message to pdf2txt@adobe.com (for plain text) or to pdf2html@adobe.com (for HTML). The converter will mail back the translation of the PDF file. You can submit multiple URLs in a single e-mail.
Rich Text Format (RTF)
Rich text format, or RTF, is a document format that can be opened, viewed and printed using any PC-based word processing package.
Microsoft Word Document (DOC)
A document that can be viewed in Microsoft Word.
If you do not have Word you can open and view Word documents by downloading the Microsoft Word Viewer (external site).
HTML Document (HTML)
A standard webpage viewed directly in your browser.
Microsoft Excel Document (XLS)
A spreadsheet that can be viewed in Microsoft Excel.
By downloading the Microsoft Excel Viewer (external site), you can open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed. You can also copy data from Excel Viewer 2003 to another program.
Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT)
A presentation or slideshow which can be viewed in Microsoft PowerPoint.
If you do not have Microsoft PowerPoint you can view PowerPoint 95, 97, 2000, and 2002 presentations by downloading Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer (external site).
Zipped PDF and RTF Formats
Some files are available for download in a compressed format (.ZIP files), which reduces download time. To decompress downloaded .ZIP files, you will need a decompressing application, such as WinZip which is available the WinZip website (external site) . Once the files are decompressed, they can be opened, viewed and printed as above.
